The Kzinti woman slowly moved about her day, her older age showing in her face and obviously hazardous state of mind. Just as she was heading in to commence the afternoon service, her daughter came around the corner with a guilty glint in her eyes.

“Hex, what have you been up to?” Vladina asked scornfully, regretting her tone as the younger Kzinti retreated back behind the low wall. “Come now…what’s on your mind little one?” she asked in a more soothing tone.

“Father has gone missing, where is he mother?” the child asked, still partially hidden behind the wall.

“Dead” the High Priestess answered quickly, her face becoming a mask of false grief and remorse, “He died the day of your birth my little one.”

“It’s not true…” the youth countered in a determined voice she would usually avoid using with her mother, “the Elders say that he lived and has disappeared.”

“They lie!” Vladina hissed, violently tugging Hex away from the wall, “he died, he is dead!”

“NO!”

Hex’s eyes shot open as tears continued to stream down her furry cheeks. A dream… it was all a dream. The Kzinti sat upright in her basket, allowing her comforter to fall away from around her shoulders. She couldn’t shake the reality of her dreams for the simple reason that they weren’t just dreams, they were memories.

Restless from yet another nightmare, the Ensign had found herself walking into the Black Hole. Hex hated the taste of the odd drinks they served and preferred her own concoctions to anything usually served on the ship, but it was a place she considered to hold good company when one was down.

The Kzinti was hardly surprised to see not one, but four of her fellow senior officers sitting together at a table, though they all had a definite air of unease around them. Hex saw no better alternative; therefore she practically dragged herself over to their table.

“Hex? What are you doing awake at this time?” Ensign Lopez asked, seemingly somewhat frazzled, but otherwise enjoying herself.

“Pre-mission jitters,” the Kzinti said smoothly, though she was usually very emotional, Hex preferred her personal business to be hers and no one else’s.

They sat together and the newest senior officer easily was drowned into the conversation as time went by. This is where her head belonged, and this was where she was needed. Though she still had her suspicions about her reoccurring dreams, Hex was glad that this one was different.

Which left her wondering why that was…
